Atargatis (Aramaic ῾Atar-῾Ata), the goddess of Hierapolis-Bambyce in Syria whose usual name among Greeks and Romans was the 'Syrian goddess' (Συρία θεά, dea Syria); a mother-goddess, giver of fertility. She is also described as a mermaid-goddess.
